Jim Abernethy

Following a very successful career as a senior executive and entrepreneur, Jim has focused his time and energy on his role as Mayor of Clarington, on his family and providing leadership on a wide range of local charity initiatives.
As Mayor for the last four years, Jim has been the driving force behind a long list of initiatives to improve our community, such as:

• Championed the philosophy of "living within our means" to reduce and control municipal spending
• Led council to significantly reduce tax increases from 8.75% to 2.35%.
• Led council in the development of a Long Term Strategic Business Plan for Clarington.
• Championed the “Zero Waste’ by 2038 resolution.
• Proposed a Code of Ethics and a Code of Conduct for Clarington Council.
• Personally supported the financial needs of Bowmanville Hospital Foundation.
• Coordinated the community effort to save our Hospital's Acute Care Services.

As Mayor, Jim consistently does what he believes is best for Clarington, not what is politically advantageous. He does his homework and when necessary is able and willing to make the tough decisions.
When Jim considers the long term impact of issues, he is concerned with how they will effect the future of his children and yours. He always takes a long term perspective when considering the impacts of his decisions and actions.
